Men’s body type calculator

Chest, waist and hips, three explicit cut-offs, and the same two extras as the women’s calculator: how far you are from the next type, and where your waist-to-hip ratio sits among 5,229 men measured in a national health survey.

The five types and the rule for each

Men’s body types (this site’s rules, inches)

TypeRule
TrapezoidChest at least 3.6 inches wider than hips or clearly defined waist: shoulders and chest carry the width, the waist is at least 9 inches smaller than the chest.
Inverted triangleChest at least 3.6 inches larger than hips, with less than 9 inches between chest and waist.
RectangleChest and hips within 3.6 inches, waist less than 9 inches smaller than the chest.
TriangleHips at least 3.6 inches larger than the chest.
OvalWaist larger than the hips and no larger than the bust.

Rules are checked in this order: oval first (waist at or above chest or hips), then chest-leads-hips by 3.6 inches (trapezoid if the waist is 9 inches under the chest, otherwise inverted triangle), then hips-lead-chest by 3.6 inches (triangle), then the rest (trapezoid with a defined waist, rectangle without). There is no published men’s standard behind these; the cut-offs are borrowed from the women’s FFIT rules so that they are explicit and consistent, and the methodology page says so.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Which measurements do I need?

Chest at the fullest point with arms down, waist at the narrowest point (or at the navel if there is no narrowest point), and hips at the fullest point. Tape level, snug not tight, over thin clothing or none.

Where do the men’s rules come from?

There is no published men’s equivalent of the women’s FFIT system. This site uses the five shapes most styling guides use and borrows FFIT’s cut-offs — 3.6 inches for a clear difference between chest and hips, 9 inches for a defined waist — so that the rules are explicit and consistent. They are this site’s convention, not a standard.

What is a trapezoid body type?

Chest wider than the hips with a defined waist: chest minus waist of 9 inches or more, or chest at least 3.6 inches over hips together with a defined waist. It is the shape most men’s tailoring is cut for.

Is oval the same as overweight?

No. Oval means the waist measures at least as much as the chest or the hips. It is a relationship between three circumferences and says nothing about weight or health.

Why does the result mention a boundary?

Because every rule is a cut-off, and if one of your measurements sits within 2 cm of one, a tape pulled slightly differently would give another label. The note tells you which measurement to re-take.
